The Honolulu (HI) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
is proud to announce that the 2025 Scholarship Application is now open!
This scholarship opportunity is available to high school seniors currently attending school within the Oahu, Hawaiʻi school district. All applicants must be planning to enroll in an institution offering a bachelor’s degree program or higher in the Fall of 2025.
Eligibility
- Graduating as part of the High School Class of 2025
- Resident of Oahu, HI
- 2.5 Minimum GPA (4.0 scale)
- Enrolled in a College, University or Trade School
The application deadline is midnight May 3rd, 2025.

How to Apply
Applicants must complete the 2025 Honolulu Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Scholarship Application either by using the online version or by downloading the PDF version for submission.
In addition to the application, an essay, completed checklist, and signature page are required. These documents must be submitted along with the application. If applying online, all required documents can be uploaded and attached directly within the submission form.
Application Package Requirements
A complete application package must include the following:
- Completed application with all sections filled out.
- Unofficial or official high school transcript
- Copies of SAT and/or ACT scores (if applicable)
- Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, coach, employer, civic leader, or someone who can speak to your leadership, character, and potential for success.
- Publishable photo of the applicant (may be used for official notifications or internal media purposes)
- Double-spaced essay (500–1,000 words) on what “Achievement” means to you and your plans for realizing success in school and beyond.

Scholarship Awards
James Howell Achievement Scholarship
“…He served as a teacher for several years before moving up the ladder into educational administration, reaching as high as an elementary school principal.”
In 1945, his father, who had been working for a few years in Philadelphia, moved his family from Soperton to Philadelphia. They were part of the Great Migration.
Jim graduated from Frankfort High School in Philadelphia, and he was awarded a scholarship to Temple University. While at Temple, he pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity in 1956. He went on to graduate with a B.S. in education in 1959.
Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. army as a second lieutenant.
His first duty station was in Germany. Later he was transferred to Ft. Lee, Virginia. From there, he traveled to Thailand. On returning to the states, he spent time in Ft. Lewis, Washington. He subsequently moved to Hawaii as part of the 25th Infantry. From Schofield, he was deployed to Vietnam. After finishing his tour in Vietnam, he went to Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. He was discharged from the army in 1969.
In 1970, he returned to Hawaii, and he started a second career in a marketing support position with IBM. He worked for IBM for 22 years, and in 1992, he took early retirement from the company.
In 1993, he started working for the State of Hawaii Judiciary department, first as a fiscal officer and later as a court bailiff.
In 1994 he retired from the state.
In 2011, he was honored by the City and County of Honolulu as being the senior male volunteer of the year.
He continues to volunteer for Hawaii SHIP which provides Medicare assistance for seniors. In addition, he is an active member of Church of the Crossroads where he sings weekly in the choir.
John Hawkins Brighter Futures Scholarship
“…A prime example of a high achiever is our very own late revered Brother, Hiliary H. Holloway, Esquire.”
John was born in 1938 and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign, IL with a Bachelor's in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Mathematics. Upon graduation John commissioned as a 2nd LT in the United States Army as a Field Artillery Officer. He served in multiple positions and assignments globally to include Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Nigeria, to name a few. He discharged as a Captain after four years to pursue his passion in the sciences. He pursued and completed his Master's Degree in Marine Biology and Science Education at the University of Hawai'i. John completed a 30 year career as as a Science Teacher at the Kaimuki Intermediate and McKinley High School and later retiring as Personnel Specialist for the Hawai'i State Department of Education in 2007. In retirement he continues to serve as adjunct faculty to the Hawai'i Pacific University's Master's Program for science teachers.
Application Review Process
- Review
All applications are carefully reviewed and evaluated by the Scholarship Committee using a scoring rubric. Applicants are assessed based on the following criteria:
- High School GPA
- College Board Test Scores (SAT/ACT)
- Essay Submission
- A holistic “whole-person” evaluation based on responses throughout the application
- Notification
Selected awardees will be contacted by a member of the Scholarship Committee via email and/or phone to be congratulated on their selection. At that time, arrangements will be made to schedule the official award presentation. - Presentation
Scholarship awards will be presented to recipients either at their high school or during a signature event hosted by the Honolulu Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. This event will serve as both the official presentation and a photo opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the awardees.

The Scholarship Committee makes scholarship award determinations based upon applications and guidelines established by scholarship funds. These scholarship awards include but are not limited to the Ramon C. Gregory Scholarship, The Hiliary H. Holloway Scholarship and the Dr. Melvin L. Jackson, Sr. Family Scholarship.

All applicants must be planning to enroll at an institution offering a bachelor degree program or higher in the fall of 2024.

Applicants must complete the 2023-2024 HAC of Kappa Alpha PSI Fraternity, Inc. application using the online application version or download the pdf. version for submission. Additionally, there is requirement for the submission of an essay, mandatory checklist and signature page that must be completed and submitted with the application. These documents can be uploaded and attached to your application when submitting online.
The application package includes the following documents:

- Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, coach, employer, civic leader or other that can attest to your leadership, character, and potential to excel in college, community, or future career objectives

- Double-spaced essay on what “Achievement” means to him and his plans for realizing success in school and subsequent endeavors. The essay composition should be at least 500 words but no more than 1000 words.

Application Process
- Review. Applications are reviewed and assessed by the Scholarship Committee using a scoring rubric that compares applicants High School GPA, College Board Test Scores, Essay Submissions, and whole of person approach from responses in the application.
- Notification. Awardees are notified by email and/or phone call by a member of the Scholarship Committee to congratulate them on their selection and to schedule a date when the award can be presented.
- Presentation. This is the day when awardees are officially presented with Scholarship Award. Awards may be presented at the applicant’s school or they may be requested to attend a signature event hosted by the HAC of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. for presentation and photo opportunity.
Scholarship Awards
Ramon C. Gregory Scholarship

Career educator Ramon Carter Gregory was born and raised in Harrisburg, PA. Upon graduating from John Harris High School in Harrisburg, he matriculated at Cheyney State Teachers College, where he majored in elementary education and was active in varsity sports and student government. Ray was president of his class sand graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1951. Initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi in 1950, Brother Gregory also holds the distinction of being a charter member of the Gamma Omega Chapter. During Ray’s 35 years with the School District of Philadelphia, he served as a teacher for several years before moving up the ladder into educational administration, reaching as high as an elementary school principal. Along the way, he earned a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Temple University and an elementary school principal’s certificate from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. On a personal level, Ray was always a family oriented man, an avid reader of many subjects and enjoyed playing golf, traveling, watching sports, gardening and discussing historical and current events.
Hiliary H. Holloway, J.D. Achievement Scholarship

Brother H.H. Holloway, a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, was initiated into the Alpha Kappa Chapter, North Carolina College, Durham, N.C. in 1947. Brother Holloway attended his first Grand Chapter meeting in 1949, and attended every subsequent meeting from 1953 until his heath failed him. In 1953 he became the fraternity’s first Executive Secretary. During the twelve years at National Headquarters, he was instrumental in establishing many of the guidelines by which the fraternity continues to administer its affairs. The uniform bookkeeping system is one of his innovations. In 1967 Brother Holloway became 3rd and 6th Grand Keeper of Records and Exchequer an office he held until 1976. In 1976 Brother Holloway became 22nd Grand Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi, an office he held for three years. Brother Holloway was the first recipient of the Philadelphia Alumni Achievement Award and he was the 33rd Laurel Wreath Wearer. At the time of his retirement, Brother Holloway was the Vice President and General Counsel of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Hiliary H. Holloway was a fully financial and active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. since his initiation into the Alpha Kappa Chapter in 1947. He has held offices on the local, provincial and national levels. Holloway worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia in 1968 as a Legal Counsel and he was later appointed as General Counsel, which made him in charge of the legal department. In 1972 Holloway became the first African American to be promoted to Vice President in the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Prior to employment at the bank, Holloway practiced law, served as National Executive Secretary of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and was Business Manager at St. Augustine College. In 1953 Holloway became the first national executive director of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and in 1976 was elected Grand Polemarch. Holloway worked as an attorney with the law firm of Hazell and Bowser and partner in the law firm of Marshall, Dennehey, Warner, Coleman & Goggin. Holloway earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina with honors. He completed a Master’s Degree at Temple University and the Juris Doctor Degree at Temple University School of Law. Among his activities, Holloway was a trustee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Lankenau Hospital and Lankenau Foundation; Philadelphia University; Mt. Olivet Tabernacle Baptist Church; Zion Nonprofit Charitable Trust (Chair) and past board chair of North Carolina Central University. He was a board member of the United Negro College Fund; Mt. Olivet Village Corporation (Chair); Metropolitan YMCA; National Medical Fellows; Governor’s Economic Development Partnership and chair of the City Planning Commission. Holloway was named one of Ebony Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Black Americans. He died February 9, 2000, and was survived by his wife Gwendolyn Larkin and their two children, Hiliary Jr. and Janis Holloway.
Melvin L. Jackson, M.D. Family Scholarship
“…Dr. Jackson […] loved God, his family, his patients, Zion Baptist Church, Morgan State University and Kappa Alpha Psi.”
Melvin Langston Jackson, M.D., a tireless worker in his professional and fraternal life, was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1935. Anyone who knew Dr. Jackson was well aware that he loved God, his family, his patients, Zion Baptist Church, Morgan State University and Kappa Alpha Psi. He graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore, MD in 1954 and he graduated from Morgan State University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry. In 1976, he graduated from Hahnemann Medical College with Doctor of Medicine Degree. Dr. Jackson was initiated into the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in 1968. He was a member of both Philadelphia and Baltimore Alumni Chapters. He received the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter Achievement Award in 1981 and he later served the fraternity as Polemarch of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter. Dr. Jackson was a Life Member of the fraternity and he was a member of the Health Committee for the Northeastern Province and Grand Chapter. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Northeastern province and the 63rd Elder Watson Diggs Award (1999) from the Grand Chapter.
